A Trip Down Memory Lane with M&M’s

There’s something inherently magical about M&M’s that instantly transports us back to childhood, isn’t there? The vivid colors, the satisfying shell, the smooth chocolate within – they’re a timeless delight. Many of us remember the excitement when the blue M&M’s were first introduced, adding another hue to the rainbow. For these Patriotic Sugar Cookies, the iconic red, white, and blue candies aren’t just a garnish; they’re an integral part of the experience, infusing each cookie with a burst of color and a delightful chocolatey crunch. While the temptation to snack on an entire bag of M&M’s is real (we’ve all been there, perhaps even “accidentally” consuming the first bag purchased for baking!), the effort of carefully sorting out the patriotic colors is truly worth it for the festive visual impact these cookies deliver.

The Secret to Unforgettable Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

The foundation of these exceptional M&M sugar cookies lies in an authentic old fashioned sugar cookie recipe, specifically adapted from the revered 1955 Edition of Good Housekeeping. This isn’t your average sugar cookie; it’s a testament to classic baking techniques that yield a cookie distinctly different from the chewy varieties often found today. If you’re accustomed to the dense, bendable texture of drop chewy sugar cookies, prepare for a delightful surprise. This recipe produces a cookie that is inherently more cakey, boasting a tender crumb and a delicate melt-in-your-mouth quality that truly sets it apart.

Buttermilk and Whipped Egg Whites: A Masterful Combination

What makes the Good Housekeeping Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookie recipe so unique and intriguing? It’s the thoughtful incorporation of two key ingredients: buttermilk and whipped egg whites. Buttermilk contributes a subtle tang and remarkable moisture, reacting with the baking soda to create a soft, even texture. However, the true magic lies in whipping the egg white to stiff peaks before gently folding it into the batter. This technique introduces air, transforming the cookie dough into a lighter, fluffier consistency. The result is a delicate cookie that practically dissolves on your tongue, a truly interesting twist on a beloved American classic that elevates the humble sugar cookie to new heights of culinary delight.

Why Choose Cakey Sugar Cookies?

In a world often dominated by chewy cookie trends, these cakey Patriotic Sugar Cookies offer a refreshing and equally satisfying alternative. A cakey sugar cookie delivers a tender, almost crumbly texture that melts in your mouth, rather than requiring a chew. This quality makes them feel lighter and more delicate, perfect for pairing with a glass of milk or a cup of tea. Their elegant simplicity and sophisticated texture are especially appealing for gatherings where a refined touch is desired, or for anyone who prefers a cookie that isn’t overly dense or rich. The subtle sweetness allows the true flavor of the sugar cookie base to shine through, complemented by the bursts of chocolate from the M&M’s.

Tips for Perfect Patriotic M&M Sugar Cookies

Achieving the perfect texture and flavor for these old fashioned sugar cookies requires attention to a few key details. Firstly, ensure all your cold ingredients, especially the egg white and buttermilk, are at room temperature. This helps them emulsify better, creating a smoother, more uniform batter. When creaming the shortening and sugar, take your time. Beat them until they are truly light and fluffy, incorporating plenty of air. This step is crucial for the cookie’s final texture. When alternating the flour mixture with the buttermilk, mix on low speed just until combined to avoid overworking the gluten, which can lead to tough cookies.

The star technique of this sugar cookie recipe is the whipped egg white. For the best results, chill your beaters and mixing bowl before beating the room temperature egg white to stiff peaks. Gently fold this aerated egg white into the batter, followed by the red, white, and blue M&M’s, being careful not to deflate the mixture. This delicate folding ensures the cookies remain light and fluffy. Finally, do not overbake! These cookies are meant to be light golden brown, not dark. Overbaking will dry them out and compromise their tender texture. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes of baking, as oven temperatures can vary.

Serving Suggestions and Storage

These Patriotic M&M Sugar Cookies are fantastic on their own, but they also make a delightful addition to any festive spread. Serve them alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a cooling treat, or with a tall glass of cold milk, a classic pairing that never disappoints. For adult gatherings, a warm cup of coffee or a festive iced tea can beautifully complement their delicate sweetness. They are, of course, a quintessential treat for national holidays like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or Labor Day, adding a burst of color and patriotic spirit to barbecues and picnics. They also make wonderful edible gifts for friends and family, showcasing your baking prowess and holiday cheer.

To keep your M&M sugar cookies fresh and tender, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-5 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the baked cookies for up to 2-3 months. Simply place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container, separating layers with parchment paper. Thaw them at room temperature before serving. An excellent make-ahead tip is to chill the cookie dough overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and can sometimes lead to an even better texture, all while offering the convenience of fresh-baked cookies whenever the craving strikes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg white room temperature
  • 1 cup M&M’s

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  • Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or using a hand mixer, mix shortening, granulated sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until very light and fluffy.
  • Reduce speed to low and mix in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture, until just combined.
  • Beat the room temperature egg white to stiff peaks. (This will happen faster if beaters and bowl are chilled). Gently fold the beaten egg white into the batter until no streaks remain. Then, carefully fold in the M&M’s.
  • Drop rounded tablespoons of batter onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, ensuring they are about 3 inches apart.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the centers are set.

Notes

You can also chill the batter overnight; the cookies will still be wonderfully light and fluffy.
